David Moyes Asks for Patience with Merlin Rohl But Says There’s ‘More to come’ from the Midfielder

The Everton boss suggests Rohl may take time to fully settle into life in the Premier League.

The German midfielder put in his most impressive Everton performance to date in the 1-0 win at Villa Park.

However, the 23-year-old was omitted from the starting XI for Monday’s visit of Leeds, with Idrissa Gueye returning from AFCON.

Indeed, Kiernan Dewbury-Hall was a second half substitute, as Everton pushed for an equaliser.

Rohl was perhaps unfortunate not to feature, and there’s an argument to be had regarding Moyes changing what was a winning team.

The Everton boss though insists there is ‘more to come’ from the young midfielder. However, he suggests that he may ‘take a bit of time’ to fully adapt.

Moyes said: “Merlin, I think, is going to take a bit of time. He’s going to fall over the ball a few times and he’s going to be a bit uncompromising at times, but he’s got other attributes which are really important and I hope that he’ll pick them up and he’ll get better as we go along.

“So he’s done a really good job as well. [Villa] was more like what we were hoping to see from Merlin as well, and I think he’s got more to come.”

THERE’S A YOUNG CORE TO EVERTON’S MIDFIELD. THEY CAN GROW TOGETHER AS A TEAM

Full strength, the Toffees have options in midfield. Such a congested squad will mean players must fight for their places.

Injuries have held the young German back at times, but he’s shown glimpses of what he’s capable of.

Alongside Tim Iroegbunam, Harrison Armstrong and Tyler Dibling, Rohl is part of a young midfield contingent.

However, while a European push remains on the cards, the remainder of this season should also be about providing those players with a platform to improve.

For me, the key is to not overreact one way or the other, whether they play well or not. There’ll be times of inconsistency, but patience will be key.
